The cardinalfish are recognized by the fact that they have two dorsal fins. These fishes are generally small (less than 12 cm). They have a relatively large mouth, which serves an important purpose in reproduction. This is because many of the cardinal fish species are mouth brooders. It is usually the male that keeps the fertilized eggs and sometimes the young even the hatch in his mouth.
